How we test balance boards

Five things happen before a board appears on this site. They are all things you could do yourself — we just do them before you have to.

Our criteria

1. The manual, not the listing. We open the instruction documents attached to a product page. That is where the deck dimensions, the load rating, the stated age range and the surface specification actually live. On the boards we assessed for this site, none of those numbers appeared in the listing specification table.
2. Specifications against buyer reports. A published measurement means more when buyers confirm it. One board's own annotated photograph gives a deck of 43.5 by 33 centimetres; two separate reviewers wearing a EU size 46 independently described the surface as too small for their feet. A size 46 foot runs about 30 centimetres, so the measurement and the complaint agree — and together they tell you more than either does alone.
3. Research with its certainty attached. Every clinical figure we publish carries the number of trials, the number of participants, the confidence interval and the certainty rating assigned by the reviewers. A result from 39 trials rated high-certainty and a result from 7 trials rated low-certainty are not the same claim, and we write them differently.
4. Demand measured, market by market. We measure what people actually search for in each country rather than translating our own vocabulary into theirs. It is how we learned that German buyers search the English term fourteen times more often than the closest German one — 40,500 against 2,900 a month, and that in Britain wobble board and balance board run almost level.
5. Safety documentation, read and named. We read what the maker commits to: the age range, the maximum load, the surface requirements, and whether a board is certified for use by children. Products intended for children fall under separate toy safety rules, and a supplier logo on a listing is not a test report.
