Wobble boards, and the single-axis board we sell
In Britain the two words are used almost interchangeably, so the label on the box tells you very little. The object underneath tells you everything, and the difference is mechanical: how many directions the deck can fall in. This page sets out both mechanisms, the measurements of the board we sell, the sizing check that catches most complaints, and what the trial evidence does and does not settle.
The two mechanisms, and how to tell them apart from a photograph
Turn the board over. That is the whole diagnosis, and it takes two seconds. A wobble board sits on a dome, a half-sphere or a ball: one round contact point under the middle of the deck, so the deck can drop towards any point of its rim and rotate while it drops. A single-axis rocker sits on a rail — a curved strip of wood running across the underside — so the deck can only tip along the line that rail runs, one way and back.
Balance trainer is a third name for the same shelf, and it is the vaguest of the three: it covers rockers, wobble boards, inflatable cushions and foam pads without distinguishing any of them. Neither word is fixed by any standard, which is why you cannot shop by the title on a listing. Two products both sold as wobble boards can turn out to be a rocker on a rail and an inflatable cushion that compresses instead of tipping. In British usage the two names run almost level — 6,600 monthly searches against 5,300 (Semrush, phrase match, measured 15 September 2026) — and we measured how the split changes from one country to the next in balance board or wobble board. A photograph of the underside settles what the title cannot.

What one axis does that a dome does not
A rail gives you a known path. The deck goes down on one edge, comes back, goes down on the other. The ankle travels a known line, the movement repeats, and you can predict where the floor will be before you arrive there. That predictability is what makes long standing workable: you can hold a conversation on a rocker, which is why this shape is the one that goes under a standing desk and why the 20-8-2 rule is written around it.
A dome takes the prediction away. The deck can drop anywhere across 360 degrees and rotate on the way down, so every correction is reactive instead of planned. That is what a multi-axis disc is for: reaction, proprioception, and the later stages of a rehabilitation programme — stages that are set by whoever examined the joint, not by a web page. Ankle work normally starts on one axis and widens outwards as control returns.
The board we sell, measured
Stavik sells one board, and it is a single-axis rocker. The deck is birch plywood, rectangular with rounded corners, and the plies are visible along all four edges. The top carries an anthracite grit surface of the kind used on a skateboard, with a border of bare wood left around it. Underneath there is two curved plywood rails, each dark-banded along its edge, joined by a straight central spine. It is used in shoes.

The measurement that decides between the two shapes
Measure your foot, then hold it against the deck width. Ours is 33 centimetres across the short side. A EU size 46 foot runs about 30 centimetres, so roughly a finger of board is left on each side of it. Two of the three longest written reviews say the surface is too small at that size: there is room for two-footed work at size 46, and the margin gets tight for single-leg work. Around size 44 and below, the question stops arising.
A round wobble board moves the same question rather than answering it: whatever diameter it is sold at, the surface is a circle, so the corners a long foot would otherwise use are not there. Whichever shape you are looking at, the deck measurement is the one to find, and on most listings it is not in the specification table. Our buying criteria explain where it hides.
What the trial evidence supports, and what it does not separate
The strongest evidence in this field says nothing about board geometry. The 2019 Cochrane review by Sherrington and colleagues pooled 108 randomised trials and 23,407 participants, and found that balance and functional exercise reduces the rate of falls by 24% — rate ratio 0.76, 95% CI 0.70 to 0.81, across 39 studies and 7,920 participants, rated high-certainty evidence. That is an unusually solid number for an exercise intervention.
Two comparisons from the same review are worth carrying with it. Strength training on its own returned a rate ratio of 1.14 with a 95% CI of 0.67 to 1.97 — an interval that crosses 1, so no effect was demonstrated. Fractures fell by 56%, risk ratio 0.44, but that figure rests on 7 trials with a wide confidence interval and should be held loosely. The review classified exercise by type, and apparatus appears nowhere in that classification: no board shape can claim trial evidence over another. For a starting benchmark, Bohannon pooled 22 studies and 3,484 participants on single-leg stance time (Topics in Geriatric Rehabilitation 22(1):70–77, 2006): a mean of 27.0 seconds at 60 to 69 years, 17.2 seconds at 70 to 79, and 8.5 seconds at 80 to 89. Which shape suits which job
- Standing at a desk for hours. One axis. A multi-axis disc asks for attention you are meant to be spending on work.
- Early ankle rehabilitation. One axis, next to a worktop, at a starting point set by the person who examined the joint.
- Reaction work and late-stage proprioception. Multi-axis movement is what that stage uses, and which stage you are at is a clinical judgement rather than a shopping decision.
- General balance and falls prevention. Start on the predictable axis and follow a progression.
- Children. Neither, usually. A board meant for children falls under toy safety rules and is a different object, which the guide for children covers.
