The standing desk balance board
Most pages about desk boards describe a feeling. This one starts from three numbers: the deck is 43.5 by 33 by 7.5 centimetres, it is rated to 158 kg, and the one study that tested the 20-8-2 pattern used a treadmill for the moving part, not a board. Those three facts decide most of what follows.
What a board actually changes under a standing desk
A sit-stand desk trades one problem for another. Prolonged standing has its own cost — heaviness in the legs, the same knee and ankle angles from one email to the next — and the standard advice is to keep moving, which nobody does while concentrating. A board removes the remembering: the deck tips a few degrees, you correct, and the correction happens below the level you are thinking at.
What decides whether it suits your desk is the shape and the measurements, and the same number pulls a desk board and a training board in opposite directions.
The 20-8-2 rule, in two sentences
That study is Gulberg Ergin’s 2019 thesis at Texas A&M University, and its findings read almost entirely in negatives: the pattern did not impair task performance, decrease attention or short-term memory, or increase discomfort. The one clear positive result was a significant difference in energy expenditure against a seated workstation.
In that study the two minutes of movement were a treadmill walk at 2.5 mph. Not a board. The segment was walking, so a board does not stand in for it — what a board changes is the eight minutes of standing, and it changes them well. Deck size: 43.5 by 33 centimetres is a desk measurement
Two of the three longest written reviews say the surface is too small for a EU size 46. The arithmetic behind that is straightforward. A EU 46 foot runs about 30 centimetres, the deck is 33 centimetres across, and single-leg work on 33 centimetres leaves roughly a finger’s width of board either side of the foot. That is a real constraint, and they hit it while training rather than while working.
At a desk the same number works the other way. Both feet stand across the 43.5 centimetre length rather than along the 33 centimetre width, and the movement you want is a few degrees of rocking rather than a single-leg hold. A deck large enough for a size 46 on one leg is a deck you step over on the way to the printer. The measurement that constrains single-leg training is the measurement that makes the board fit under a desk.

One axis is the right shape for a desk
The gap between the two shapes is the gap between something you can do while thinking about something else and something that takes over. A single-axis rocker becomes background after a day or two. A multi-axis board under a desk becomes the task. Balance board or wobble board sets the two side by side, and the wobble board page covers the multi-axis shape.
The same logic separates a desk board from an ankle board, set up around a joint rather than a working day, and from a board for children, which falls under toy safety rules and is a different object rather than a smaller one.
What the evidence covers, and how far it reaches
The 2019 Cochrane review by Sherrington and colleagues pooled 108 trials and 23,407 participants. The figure above is its clearest result; the comparison is its most instructive. Strength training on its own returned a rate ratio of 1.14, 95% CI 0.67 to 1.97 — an interval spanning no effect in both directions, so no effect was demonstrated. Fractures fell by 56%, risk ratio 0.44, from 7 trials with a wide interval.
That review classified exercise type, never equipment. Half an hour on a rocker at a desk is not the supervised programme those trials ran, and the 24% figure does not transfer to it. It is the reason to take balance seriously; the board puts a few minutes of it into a day that otherwise contains none. What the evidence shows goes through the review, and the downsides covers harm.
A second number tells you where you stand today. Bohannon pooled 22 studies and 3,484 participants on the single-leg stand: 27.0 seconds on average between 60 and 69, 17.2 seconds between 70 and 79, 8.5 seconds between 80 and 89. A realistic first two weeks
- Day one, away from the desk. Stand on it in shoes, hold a doorframe, find the point where the rails sit level. Two minutes.
- Days two to four, twenty minutes at the desk. Calls are the easiest block.
- Keep a handhold in reach for the first week. The desk edge counts.
- Stop when your calves complain, not when a timer says so. Soreness in week one is ordinary; pain inside a joint is not.
- Walk the two minutes. The rocker covers the standing block; the movement block is a walk.
- After two weeks, add the progression. Balance board exercises takes the same board from two feet to one.

Is a balance board good for a standing desk?
It is useful for the standing block rather than for the whole day. A single-axis rocker keeps ankles, calves and hips working through small corrections while you type, which is what prolonged static standing removes. It does not stand in for walking: in the one study of the 20-8-2 pattern, the movement segment was a treadmill walk at 2.5 mph.
How long should you stand on a balance board at a desk?
Start at twenty minutes and build from there. The 20-8-2 pattern puts eight minutes of standing in every half hour, and a board fits inside that block. Two weeks of twenty-minute sessions is a reasonable ramp before extending, and calf soreness in the first week is ordinary.
